Welcome to The Escape House, designed in 1962 by Arthur Elrod as his personal home and creative laboratory. This house is a standout example of Desert Modernism, combining clean lines, bold colors, and custom furnishings to create a home that feels both stylish and livable.
Arthur Elrod (1924–1986) was a pioneering interior designer who played a major role in shaping Palm Springs’ modern style. He did not just decorate homes; he designed complete environments where architecture, furniture, color, and technology work together. His style was colorful, playful, and forward-thinking, favoring custom furnishings, built-in systems, and thoughtful details that made modern homes feel personal and exciting. The Escape House is his most famous early work, where visitors can see his ideas fully realized.
Elrod designed every detail himself, from the layout and lighting to the furniture and built-in sound systems, making the house a total work of art. The dramatic 14-foot ceilings and large windows fill the space with light and make the rooms feel open and airy, while the vibrant color palette and careful details give it warmth and personality.
The main living area features a 22-foot-long sofa and a V’Soske rug, which together define the space and invite gathering and conversation. Built-in sound systems, advanced for the time, show Elrod’s belief that technology should be seamless and part of daily life.
“It was love at first sight,” says the current owner. “I was drawn to the amazing spaces, the light, and the original interiors. I have felt a deep responsibility to care for and protect it.”
The house has remained mostly unchanged for over 60 years, giving visitors a rare chance to see it almost as Elrod left it. The current owner plans to update essential systems and the kitchen, but key features like the sofa and rug will be preserved, respecting Elrod’s original vision while making the home functional for today.
The Escape House shows how modern design can be both bold and comfortable. Today, it stands as a living testament to Elrod’s creativity, vision, and love for the desert lifestyle.
